Celebs and insiders react to Ashton Kutcher joining 'Two and a Half Men'

Even before CBS confirmed that Ashton Kutcher would officially be filling the gaping hole left by Charlie Sheen joining the cast of “Two and a Half Men,” Twitter was rife with opinions about the addition of Kutcher.

Neil Patrick Harris had a very positive response, tweeting, "Ashton's replacing Charlie? Good Times! CBS shindigs just got much easier on the eyes..."

“Arrested Development” producer John Levenstein foretold the future, writing Sheen, “may have overplayed his hand.”

Jeopardy champ Ken Jennings took the cerebral route, mocking Kutcher’s math skills and his tweet about the square root of 6.5 (it’s 2.5, in case you didn’t catch it).

Within minutes of the announcement, David Letterman’s head writers and co-executive producers Justin and Eric Stangel were at it. Eric suggested renaming Sheen's tour the “Torpedo of Unemployment.”

And Justin pointed out that for Charlie, who’s now out of work, Regis Philbin will be creating an opening on a television show quite soon.

“Cougar Town” producer Kevin Biegel joked that Sheen's got something else lined up already. “Ahem ... did you hear, Charlie Sheen signed on for his next project. It’s called, “Dude, Where’s My Job?”

So far Sheen has remained mum, not returning text messages or tweeting about his replacement, but his "Torpedo of Truth" guitarist Robert Patterson wrote simply, “Time for GYM.”

What do you think about the replacement? Leave a comment below.

FAIL........... Without charlie sheen the show will fold. Its run its course and it needs to be canceled. Ashton Lutcher is not funny and his movies prove it.

ROFL at the show folding . . . Sheen is a washed up addict . . . I'll actually start watching the show now.

The last sitcom of Ashton's I watched and found funny. He'll do a good job. I can now return to watching the show.

Kutcher? That's the best they could do? Should have taken the easy path and euthanized the show.

Wow, they are really scraping the bottom of the barrel. You can tell who will be watching it be the nerdy replys they give. Anybody who enjoys comedy will immediately switch the channel. This sounds like a giant turd in a punchbowl to me!

Kutcher will be a great addition to the show. I'll finally watch it. With Charlie Sheen I couldn't stomach watching it. He is such a horrible actor - his delivery was flat and the show was just awful. Kutcher will be fun to watch!

So the people that think this will fail must have never seen That 70's Show. He played a womanizing idiot teenager and did it quite well. Since he is coming in as a new character maybe it will be Kelso from that show.

This was a choice I never thought about but I think it will be a good fit. I will watch for sure just to see how they writer off Charlie Harper. I wonder if Lorre will go the route of a gruesome accident, an STD or maybe a prison sentence.

All this doesn't matter to Sheen because he has all sorts of work in the pipeline. People are pounding down his door. At least that's what he believes in his own mind. DUH!!!! Losing.

Kelso only worked because it was a great ensemble cast with other personalities to play off of. A Kelso type character in 2 1/2 Men will look like what we expect Jake to be when he's older. I think Alan should request a paternity test.

"Sheen is a washed up addict . ."

Exactly. And Kutcher isn't. What's to watch anymore? The show worked because Charlie Harper was a loser. They effectively created a Married... With Children dynamic. Kutcher is too young and too much of a pretty boy to keep that rolling. If it does work, it will have to be as a new show despite the old title.

I LOVE Ashton Kutcher - he is funny, and not bad to look at either - a MUCH BETTER pick than Charlie Sheen. I will put it on DVD now so I don't miss any of them. Sheen is a loser - who thinks he is everything, and he is NOT good looking, not funny, full of himself, and anyone can read lines....

I will predict that the show will lose it's regular viewers and gain the "Jackass" and "Punk'd" crowd, who have a mind span of about 10 seconds. The new format may last a year. Book it!

Charlie got an Emmy for Spin City. This show is going to tank. It was written FOR Charlie Sheen to play himself. Come on people! So much HATE for Charlie Sheen when all he did was GO PUBLIC with what most stars do in PRIVATE. Actors are PEOPLE not GODS! I wish I was unemployed with a 50 million in the bank. Boo hoo haters.

Loki - I don't know anyone who hates Charlie Sheen. Most of us just seehim as the pathetic loser he is. Don't hate him - just wouldn't waste time watching a sub-par performance.

    #3.3 - Fri May 13, 2011 3:53 PM EDT

Loki, I'm not hating on Charlie, just a little tired of his holier than thou attitude. He is all talk and without a steady income and his lifestyle that 50 mil you believe he has banked will dry up pretty quick. His Adonis DNA has turned to Adonis POS.

    #3.4 - Fri May 13, 2011 3:55 PM EDT

HAHAHAHAHA Adonis POS. Now THAT was funny! :) I dig what you are saying. Those 7 gram rocks can cost quite a bit....and of course I was being funny about 50 milion in the bank.

My point was he is human just like the rest of us but his story gets on TMZ and he gets 7 million to do a tour about nothing...I want to do anything about nothing for 7 million which I do know he was paid by LiveNation. If I was an addict I would rather be rich and have a rich and famous dad rather than living in a box under the freeway. I think we all would want it easier right?

    All in fun

Kutcher is a jerk doing all that punking. Some of it seemed stereotyping African Americans as criminals. Jamie Kennedy's idea was much better but Kurcher just stole it. He said "That's a good idea - I am going to do that!" and did! I don't forget stuff like that.

CBS wanted all the Tweeters and FB crowd. They don't follow the news or read much beyond that.

Charlie - hope to see you on another show in the future. I would watch that. Create an idea. Shop it around.

Sorry Charlie! The only thing that made 'Sheen' funny was his supporting actors, Jon Cryer, Angus T Jones, Conchata Ferrell, Melanie Lynskey, & Ryan Stiles.

I look forward to seeing Ashton Kutcher "A Tall Cool Glass of Water" with this no fail cast!

It'll be a different show. It might be ok, but I doubt it'll be as good as before. I'm not a big fan of Charlie Sheen the person, but he was perfect for the role of a carefree rake.

          Reply#4 - Fri May 13, 2011 1:53 PM EDT

I agree. Best replacement I can think of is Robert Downey Jr. Of course, he has real work to do so I'd have gone with Rob Lowe; he was excellent in a more extreme, but, similar role in last season's Californication.

            #4.1 - Fri May 13, 2011 2:34 PM EDT

Zoroaster, those guys, Downey and Lowe, I think were just too old. I'm glad they picked fresh young talent, and I absolutely LOVE Ashton Kutcher.

Don't forget he is replacing Charlie Sheen, not Charlie Harper. You guys are picking actors to play the roll of Charlie Harper and that doesn't appear to be the intention. Chuck Lorre will kill off that character somehow.

I don't like Kutcher, can't see what type of role he will play here. But the writers on this show are brilliant and I bet they come up with a completely different character than Kutcher has ever played before. Browns is correct...Kutcher is not playing Charlie Harper. He is playing a different character. It's up to the writers to develop this character and for Kutcher to pull it off. Let's see what happens.

Hey, the character Sheen played on the show was named "Charlie." Doesn't the producer get it? Take Sheen off the show and you have "One and a Half Men." Kutcher, who is in a monogomous relationship, can never be "the new Charlie."

My guess is you guys just go straight to writing comments because he is not replacing Charlie Harper. They are writing a new character for Kutcher to play. I think while they are at it they should take the "half" out of the title of the show. The kid is no longer a kid and is actually bigger than either of the men.

I vote for and also think there may be a new title for the show.

will be interesting to see how they "fold in" ashton's character - missing brother? long-lost cousin? brother-in-law of the ex-wife?

and then there's what to do with the current back-story for Charlie's character - mother, wife, stalker, his house, his career - all directly tied dominantly to HIM - ....so did he just "disappear"? perhaps a drunken driving accident? or did he drown drunkenly one night in front of his own house... should make for some interesting sitcom gymnastics to integrate him, since he'll just "be gone" with no preplot lineup

Not hard, Charlie doesn't come back from a date one night and a message is recieved stating the improbable: He eloped with his latest fling. That leaves the need for a new roommate to cover the bills. Introducing Kutcher. Ok, so the last part (Introducing Kutcher) needs help, but, the rest of the sub-plot is solid. ; )

Ashton's casting was inspired! He'll bring a fresh, young, and healthy face to the show. No drug, booze, porno, hooker, or domestic violence baggage with him.I also believe that he will be able to bring in Hollywood A-Listers as special cameo guests. That alone could be a funny, running gag (ala Dean Martin opening the door on his old show to find a surprise guest).

The Charlie Harper character was all but written off last February when he went to Paris with Rose. Considering what has transpired since, that episode was pure genius! Now, Alan can receive text messages from Rose from time to time about their where abouts in Europe as they try to keep a step ahead of her "husband."

The show's writing is so exceptional that even a no-talent like myself would look like a comedic genius. If a hung over ego maniac got paid a fortune to mumble words written by others...well, then I can too.

I am looking forward to the show's return, Ashton's character, and seeing the rest of the wonderful cast.

That's the WHOLE reason the show was so popular, otherwise, with Ashton Kutcher, its another sorry 70's show/Punk'd. Oh well, I guess the 11-15 year old demographics are better than nothing.

I think now is the perfect time to make Alan three-dimensional. That's easy to do; he can remain clueless, obsessive and annoying but he can grow in his relationship with his son...both their roles can take on something. I'm suggesting this happen slowly, not all at once.

Ashton Kucher is just not funny, he's a dweeb as his Nikon commercials clearly show. I think they show might last a season or so, then fade out. Charlie Sheen was great in the role because he was not acting, he plays that part in real life.

No one, even Ashton Kutcher, can put 2 1/2 back on track. How will they write him in? As Charlie Harper-that's incredible; as his bro; that's asinine. Regardless, the show can not go on for long. The cat's dead, get over it.

I'll tell you something that's worse, anyone that watches a show b/c of the "hotness" of a person and drools on their keyboard to tell you about it. I never watched this show before, and I'm not going to now. I think the producers screwed Sheen over. Why is everyone acting like such a douche about Sheen? Who cares what he does outside the show? He shows up for work, works, puts out a quality product (I suppose), then leaves and has fun with his boatload of money. The one thing I am looking forward to is seeing Mike and Molly fail. Stupid premise and bad acting, only carried by the weight of its lead in, which is now gone. Eff CBS.

A lot of people care about what someone does outside the job, and we don't like to support someone else's habit (spending money or just goodwill toward the show's advertisers.) Sheen did not put out a quality product, he did no acting, he was a drunk and womanizer in and out of the show. Sheen wasn't the one winning awards for the show. If you had watched the show and done your research, you wouldn't have to say "I suppose", and you'd know why everyone says Sheen is a douche bag.

Mike and Molly is one of the best shows on television, with a lot of people like me having that opinion, it won't fail for a long, long time. It shows that fat, skinny, white, black, alien, old and even dumb blondes can coexist.

Meg...even the crew stated that Charlie showed up for work knowing his lines...and ready to work...not drunk..not hung over....and did his job as a professional. Your ignorant post shows you for what you are...I doubt you ever even watched the show...you just like to run your mouth to feel important and get attetnion.

I've been a loyal 2.5 watcher since its first season and I was even getting a bit tired of Charlie's character, not to mention Mr. Tiger Blood himself. There are only so many gags you can write about a guy who suffers from a serious Peter Pan complex, is an alcoholic and an unapologetic womanizer. The show had begun to get stale. I'm actually excited about Ashton's joining the cast. I too am wondering how Chuck and his writers are going to deal with the abrupt departure of Charlie and the appearance of whatever Ashton's character's name is going to be. I wondered if they might take a page from a previous episode and have Charlie try to snag another hot, young beach bunny by go surfing with her, only to really drown this time instead of just seeing his dad's floating head. Or possibly kill him off like they did his real life brother (Emilio Estevez) when he guested on the show as one of Charlie's long time pals and drinking buddies. Who knows? All I DO know is that with Chuck Lorre writing it, it will be ROFL time for certain. Good luck to the whole cast and crew. I really look forward to having you guys back in my living room on Monday nights this fall.

I'll watch a few episodes before I make up my mind. I wasn't too happy since the kid has grown. I'll give it a chance but am not very optimistic about the future.

You got it right Milt. The kid being grown killed the premise of the title. It also took away a lot of the inappropriate scenarios. The kid really has to go.

Maybe Kutcher comes in with a kid so they can keep the premise.

                                  We will wait and see.
