PETA names Janet Jackson 'Grinch of the Year'

    Getty

Janet Jackson, shown here performing on Dec. 5, in Miami Beach, Florida, is not on PETA's good list.

    by Justin Fenner, Styleite

PETA just can’t let an old dog rest. The animal rights organization stirred up its nearly year-old campaign against singer Janet Jackson, who added part-time furrier to her resume with a gig designing a collection for Blackglama. Time and again, PETA called for her to denounce fur, and now that she hasn’t, the organization named her the first ever PETA "Grinch of the Year".

The award (if you can call it that) comes with the distinction of having angered PETA enough to have its members formally denounce you. And from the tone of PETA’s spokespeople, they’re not going to let Jackson forget just how angry they are.

“When Janet Jackson had her infamous wardrobe malfunction during Super Bowl XXXVIII, at least what popped into view of 170 million onlookers belonged to her, unlike the animal skins she drapes herself in, which are as dead as her fashion taste and her career.”

PETA also named celebrity fur-wearers Cameron Crowe and Kim Kardashian to the list. We're curious to see who gets added in 2012 — and whether or not it actually makes any difference in whether or not they wear fur.

Jessica and Ashlee Simpson to launch baby, maternity lines

    Mike Coppola / Getty Images

Jessica Simpson announced future design plans at the 25th Annual Footwear News Achievement Awards on Nov. 29 in New York.

    By Justin Fenner, Styleite

If you had any lingering doubts that Jessica Simpson is running an unstoppable fashion empire, let us put them to rest. Thursday night, at the launch of her joint fashion venture with little sister Ashlee, Jessica told the press she’s already working on two or three new projects — and no, none of them involves singing.

Women’s Wear Daily reports that Simpson, who’s expecting a child of her own soon, plans on adding clothes for pregnant women to her repertoire — and stuff for the under-5 set to run around in, too.

Simpson called the new girls’ collection, being produced by The Jones Group Inc., “a combination of both of our styles. She [Ashlee] is very rock ’n’ roll, and I’m very American.” She also said she just signed a deal for a maternity line, and will also be designing girls’ footwear. And should she give birth to a boy? Boys’ clothing is a possibility, too, she added.

Simpson will find out the sex of her unborn child on Monday, and if it’s a boy, we’d be willing to bet a line called Simpson by Jessica Simpson will be in stores by next spring.

So let’s recap: She’s got shoes, handbags, outerwear, denim, apparel, fragrances, luggage and and a jewelry line, all of which are more or less selling like gangbusters. Once she figures out a way to do men’s clothing and starts putting feelers out for a home collection, Jessica Simpson is basically going to rule the lifestyle category. And there’s nothing you can do about it.

Garner: Rachel Zoe refuses to put me in maternity clothes

    Getty Images

No maternity clothing here: Jennifer Garner at the "Butter" premiere on Sept. 13, 2011 in Toronto, Canada; Garner at the Motion Picture & Television Fund's "Reel Stories, Real Lives" on Nov. 5, 2011 in Los Angeles; Garner in Lanvin dress at the Butter premiere in November 2011.

    By Chiara Atik

There is no better excuse than pregnancy for elastic waistbands and loose-fitting shirts. Unfortunately for Jennifer Garner, who is expecting her third child in February, stylist Rachel Zoe has something else in mind for her.

“Rachel Zoe is so determined to not put me in maternity clothes,” the actress told InStyle recently. (Interestingly, Zoe declared Garner her celebrity mom style icon last month).

Indeed, unlike fellow pregnant stars Beyonce or Jessica Simpson, who have lately taken to flaunting their baby bumps, Garner has been seen at events wearing dresses that non-pregnant starlets might also wear on the red carpet.

At the AFI screening of Butter in Los Angeles on Nov. 7, Garner wore a loose, asymmetrical Lanvin mini-dress, paired with thick black heels and a whole lotta leg. The previous Saturday, she wore a tightly-fitted black lace dress with towering bronze heels and a black tuxedo jacket at The Hollywood Reporter's Annual Next Generation Reception.

Of course, while Zoe may dictate Garner’s red carpet look, daytime is a different story. In the past few weeks, Garner has been repeatedly photographed out and about in Los Angeles, wearing comfortable clothing that much more closely resembles the wardrobe of an expectant mom: loose fitting jeans, leggings, flats, and maternity tops.

And as for red carpet looks for the duration of her pregnancy, Garner hasn’t given up hope of maternity-wear.

“I have four months to go," Garner said. "Sooner or later, [Zoe] is going to have to put me in a maternity dress. Eventually that is going to happen, but so far she has gotten her way.”

How can one attempt Garner's chic wardrobe on a budget? Rosie Pope, maternity fashion designer and star of Bravo's "Pregnant In Heels," uses TODAY.com's Katie Quinn to showcase the best fall and winter trends for new moms and moms-to-be.

Rocawear pulls controversial Jay-Z 'Occupy' T-shirt offline

    GlobalGrind.com

Jay-Z, shown here with Russell Simmons, has been criticized for his recent $22 "Occupy All Streets" T-shirt.

    by Justin Fenner, Styleite

Saturday morning, it seems Jay-Z took his much-maligned “Occupy All Streets” T-shirts off the sales rack.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Rocawear, the Jay-Z-owned clothing label that started selling the shirts Friday, stopped selling them because of the negative response they got in the press. Before pulling the shirts, the company released a statement confirming that they had been created to support the Occupy Wall Street movement, but Rocawear had no official plans to donate proceeds from the sale of the shirt to the cause.

The ‘Occupy All Streets’ T shirt was created in support of the ‘Occupy Wall Street’ movement. Rocawear strongly encourages all forms of constructive expression, whether it be artistic, political or social. ‘Occupy All Streets’ is our way of reminding people that there is change to be made everywhere, not just on Wall Street. At this time we have not made an official commitment to monetarily support the movement.

And that, understandably, is what made a lot of people angry.

We’re sure Jay-Z had the best of intentions, but what people saw was of a member of the wealthiest 1 percent making money by cosigning the sentiments of a movement run by the 99 percent, and not kicking any of it back to them. This shirt, they believed, was another example of the rich getting richer, making the shirt itself seem a little hollow.

So where are the $22 garments now? They’ve disappeared from the Rocawear website, but we have no doubt that there are countless thousands of them in distribution centers everywhere. Maybe, if the company donated those shirts to the protesters, it could save itself from a little of the embarrassment it’s suffered over the past few days.

Dakota Fanning's fragrance ad banned in the UK

    By Verena von Pfetten, Styleite

Marc Jacobs' ads have a tendency to make us blush, but we never thought they were racy enough to get banned. However, the British Advertising Standards Authority disagrees: They have just shut down an ad for the Jacobs' fragrance Oh, Lola, featuring 17-year-old Dakota Fanning.

In the ad, Fanning is shown holding an oversize bottle of the fragrance, placed right between her legs. Earlier this summer, many criticized Marc Jacobs for what they deemed a provocative and inappropriate ad.

    Marc Jacobs

Too grown up? Dakota Fanning is the new face for Marc Jacobs' new perfume, Oh, Lola!

    The ASA told the Telegraph:

"We noted that the model was holding up the perfume bottle which rested in her lap between her legs and we considered that its position was sexually provocative. We understood the model was 17 years old but we considered she looked under the age of 16. We considered that the length of her dress, her leg and position of the perfume bottle drew attention to her sexuality. Because of that, along with her appearance, we considered the ad could be seen to sexualise a child."

Coty, the makers of the fragrance, defended the ad, calling it "provoking, but not indecent".

It's certainly provocative — that bottle placement was no accident and Jacobs, at the time of launch, admitted to WWD he was making a conscious Lolita reference, saying, "I knew [Dakota] could be this contemporary Lolita, seductive yet sweet" — but does it cross a line?

She's not making a sexy face, nor is the perfume bottle phallic in any way, she is also fully dressed and is wearing a bra, so although it's a bit edgy and has everyone talking, I don't think it necessarily is meant to be perverse. Controversial maybe, but not perverse.

Should Kim Kardashian give back her engagement ring?

    EPA, Getty Images

Bling it on! Kim Kardashian flaunted her engagement ring from Kris Humphries in their first public appearance as an engaged couple on May 27, 2011.

    By Rina Raphael

If your marriage lasts 72 days, are you required to return the engagement ring?

It's a heated debate on the interwebs, with reality-TV addicts debating whether Kim Kardashian ought to return the ridiculously large, $2 million diamond ring she received from now-ex-husband Kris Humphries.

TMZ reports that Kim's pre-nup included a clause that requires her to buy the ring back from Kris for its original price if the two divorce. However, Kim's mother, Kris Jenner, thinks the ring should stay with its rightful Kardashian owner.

"A gift is a gift," Kris said last Thursday on "Fox and Friends." "If you look at the etiquette books, it says keep a present." Yet according to etiquette expert Harriette Cole, traditional protocol is to return the ring if the union has lasted less than a year (particularly if it is the groom's family heirloom).

Kim is currently in Minnesota, reportedly trying to smooth things over with Kris. No news yet on what she intends to do with the ring, but perhaps she has a plan? Maybe she'll donate it to the state of Minnesota as a peace offering, as she always seemed to pooh-pooh the idea of ever moving there with Kris.

Madonna to launch clothing line, fragrance for 'older' women

    By Justin Fenner, Styleite

Do you look longingly at the Material Girl section of your local Macy's juniors department every time you walk past it, wishing that Madonna would make a clothing line grown women could wear without feeling bad about it? Your wish is about to come true.

Related: Madonna Wants You To Know ‘Material Girl’ Is Ironic

Women's Wear Daily reports that Madonna will soon launch Truth or Dare by Madonna, a lifestyle brand aimed at an "older customer." Representatives of MG Icon, the company that manages Material Girl, say Truth or Dare will start with a fragrance, then expand to clothing, handbags and accessories in the years to come.

Dress like Madge? Madonna attends the premiere for 'W.E' on October 23 in London.

"Over the past several years, I have been approached countless times to create my own brand," Madonna said. "The timing is right and I have found great partners in Iconix, who can help translate my vision to reality."

Michelle Williams' heartbreaking reason for pixie cut

    Ethan Miller / Getty Images

Michelle Williams, in her signature pixie hairdo, arrives at the Academy Awards on February 27, 2011 in Hollywood, California.

    By Rina Raphael

Michelle Williams' pixie haircut isn't just about fuss-free style.

In a new interview with British Elle, the talented actress reveals why she intends to keep her cropped 'do even though, she says, her six-year-old daughter Matilda and heterosexual men dislike the look:

"… It's been a really long time since I had long hair, five years," Williams told Elle. "Of course, the only people who like it are gay men and my girlfriends. Straight men across the board are not into this hair!"

Why the resistance? The Oscar nominee is keeping it short for an emotional reason: as a tribute to late former fiancé, actor Heath Ledger. "I cut it for the one straight man who has ever liked short hair and I wear it in memorial of somebody who really loved it."

Williams has often spoken of her heartbreak since Heath Ledger's death in 2008. In September, she told Vogue magazine that life has settled since the death of Ledger, but it's affected all facets of her life. She said she now looks at life from a "lens" where everything is "impermanent."

As for her hairstyle, she might want reconsider how men view her short hair. Some prefer it:

"Michelle Williams needs to up that straight-men-who-like-her-short-hair count to two," says Kurt Schlosser, TODAY.com's Celebrity Sightings editor. "She stands out every time she steps on red carpets populated with cookie-cutter blondes sporting the same 'do."

Beyonce reveals plans for sexy maternity line

    Getty Images file

A pregnant Beyonce, clad in sequins, attends the Beyonce Pulse fragrance launch at Penthouse on September 21, 2011 in New York City.

    By Rina Raphael

Beyonce's pregnancy is only getting bigger.

After announcing she's expecting with husband Jay-Z at the August 28 VMAs, the star's baby campaign is in full force. Beyonce has now announced plans for a maternity line under her House of Deréon fashion label.

"All I see now are clothes that are flattering on a pregnant woman," Beyonce, 30, told Harper's Bazaar. "It's been so exciting for me! I love figuring out designs that still make me feel edgy and sexy while pregnant. Flowery fabrics are always flattering — but I still rock my stilettos."

Beyonce has been photographed in recent weeks showing off her glamorous pregnancy wardrobe, including a sequin blazer on top of a sequin mini-dress.

So it's no surprise she's going into the baby-bump business, as everything the celebrity does has her "empire" in mind. Beyonce recently said her wait to have children had much to do with her career ambition. "It was important to me that I give myself time to focus on becoming the woman I want to be, building my empire, my self-worth, before I became a mother," she told Harper's Bazaar. "Now God has blessed us with the ultimate."

The star is due in February 2012. We can't wait for the next step: Beyonce's baby clothing collection.

Joe Jonas wants to start his own food blog

    AP file

    By Vidya Rao

While eating a calamari salad, sea scallops and Cuban barbecued chicken, the middle bro of the Jonas persuasion told The New York Times that he wants “to start a food blog eventually.” The 22-year-old singer also expressed his love for rattlesnake tacos and his admiration for chefs Mario Batali and Ferran Adria.

“I don’t really get starstruck ever, but when it comes to chefs, I will sometimes get nervous,” he told the Times. “If there’s a chef I really like, I will freak, because I think their talent is so different from what I do.”

While the article describes Jonas as “a devotee of fine dining,” his website lists his favorite food as a chicken cutlet sandwich with mayo.

Jonas served as a guest judge on an episode of “Top Chef” in which cheftestant Dale Talde remarked, “I had no idea who Joe Jonas was. I thought he might be a pastry chef.”

While we don’t know if Jonas will go through with creating a food blog or whether he’s truly a connoisseur, we’re sure the teenybopper set has an appetite for anything Jonas.

Michelle Williams used padding to embody Marilyn Monroe

    Annie Leibovitz/Vogue

To promote her upcoming film “My Week with Marilyn,” actress Michelle Williams posed as the sultry blond for a Vogue magazine spread with iconic photographer Annie Leibovitz. The talented star shared her views on motherhood, the death of former fiancé Heath Ledger, and why playing Marilyn was daunting.

    Annie Leibovitz/Vogue

“As soon as I finished the script, I knew that I wanted to do it, and then I spent six months trying to talk myself out of it,” she told Vogue. “But I always knew that I never really had a choice. I’ve started to believe that you get the piece of material that you were ready for.”

    Annie Leibovitz/Vogue

Williams partly credits her new-found confidence to age. "I feel like something has changed for me, but it’s a new change, so it’s going to be hard for me to describe,” she said. “Maybe it has something to do with turning 30. I don’t feel as shy or nervous or self-conscious. I have more confidence that I can handle what life brings me. I don’t feel scared to have an idea and express it.” She adds, “I feel giddy about it because it’s a complete transformation. It’s like I’ve found my voice.”

Williams says she tried to gain weight for the role to have some of Monroe's famous curves but it all went to her face. She opted instead to fill herself out with padding.

What do you think of Williams' Marilyn? Does she do the star justice?

Kim Kardashian chooses a wedding dress designer

Kim Kardashian will wear a Vera Wang-designed wedding gown when she marries Kris Humphries on Aug. 20.

    By Amy DiLuna

And it's an old friend of the family.

Celebrity fave Vera Wang will be designing the bombshell's gown.

"Vera has been a close family friend for a long time and we had talked about this moment for years," Kardashian wrote on her blog. She'll wed basketball player Kris Humphries on Aug. 20. "So when it came to picking my wedding dress designer, she was the first person I thought of. No one designs gowns the way she does!"

Wang is maybe the most famous of all celebrity wedding dress designers, having recently outfitted Ivanka Trump and Chelsea Clinton (and Kim's sister, Khloe, for her 2009 wedding to Lamar Odom).

Wang's known for classic designs that incorporate modern touches, and there's no doubt Kim will make hers extra glam. Back in June, E! revealed some of the items on her registry, which include $840 ashtrays and four $880 serving spoons.

For her part, Wang is thrilled. "What a glorious moment!" she told E! News. "I am so thrilled to be dressing Kim for her wedding to Kris Humphries!"
