PETA names Janet Jackson 'Grinch of the Year'

    Getty

Janet Jackson, shown here performing on Dec. 5, in Miami Beach, Florida, is not on PETA's good list.

    by Justin Fenner, Styleite

PETA just can’t let an old dog rest. The animal rights organization stirred up its nearly year-old campaign against singer Janet Jackson, who added part-time furrier to her resume with a gig designing a collection for Blackglama. Time and again, PETA called for her to denounce fur, and now that she hasn’t, the organization named her the first ever PETA "Grinch of the Year".

The award (if you can call it that) comes with the distinction of having angered PETA enough to have its members formally denounce you. And from the tone of PETA’s spokespeople, they’re not going to let Jackson forget just how angry they are.

“When Janet Jackson had her infamous wardrobe malfunction during Super Bowl XXXVIII, at least what popped into view of 170 million onlookers belonged to her, unlike the animal skins she drapes herself in, which are as dead as her fashion taste and her career.”

PETA also named celebrity fur-wearers Cameron Crowe and Kim Kardashian to the list. We're curious to see who gets added in 2012 — and whether or not it actually makes any difference in whether or not they wear fur.

Jessica and Ashlee Simpson to launch baby, maternity lines

    Mike Coppola / Getty Images

Jessica Simpson announced future design plans at the 25th Annual Footwear News Achievement Awards on Nov. 29 in New York.

    By Justin Fenner, Styleite

If you had any lingering doubts that Jessica Simpson is running an unstoppable fashion empire, let us put them to rest. Thursday night, at the launch of her joint fashion venture with little sister Ashlee, Jessica told the press she’s already working on two or three new projects — and no, none of them involves singing.

Women’s Wear Daily reports that Simpson, who’s expecting a child of her own soon, plans on adding clothes for pregnant women to her repertoire — and stuff for the under-5 set to run around in, too.

Simpson called the new girls’ collection, being produced by The Jones Group Inc., “a combination of both of our styles. She [Ashlee] is very rock ’n’ roll, and I’m very American.” She also said she just signed a deal for a maternity line, and will also be designing girls’ footwear. And should she give birth to a boy? Boys’ clothing is a possibility, too, she added.

Simpson will find out the sex of her unborn child on Monday, and if it’s a boy, we’d be willing to bet a line called Simpson by Jessica Simpson will be in stores by next spring.

So let’s recap: She’s got shoes, handbags, outerwear, denim, apparel, fragrances, luggage and and a jewelry line, all of which are more or less selling like gangbusters. Once she figures out a way to do men’s clothing and starts putting feelers out for a home collection, Jessica Simpson is basically going to rule the lifestyle category. And there’s nothing you can do about it.

Garner: Rachel Zoe refuses to put me in maternity clothes

    Getty Images

No maternity clothing here: Jennifer Garner at the "Butter" premiere on Sept. 13, 2011 in Toronto, Canada; Garner at the Motion Picture & Television Fund's "Reel Stories, Real Lives" on Nov. 5, 2011 in Los Angeles; Garner in Lanvin dress at the Butter premiere in November 2011.

    By Chiara Atik

There is no better excuse than pregnancy for elastic waistbands and loose-fitting shirts. Unfortunately for Jennifer Garner, who is expecting her third child in February, stylist Rachel Zoe has something else in mind for her.

“Rachel Zoe is so determined to not put me in maternity clothes,” the actress told InStyle recently. (Interestingly, Zoe declared Garner her celebrity mom style icon last month).

Indeed, unlike fellow pregnant stars Beyonce or Jessica Simpson, who have lately taken to flaunting their baby bumps, Garner has been seen at events wearing dresses that non-pregnant starlets might also wear on the red carpet.

At the AFI screening of Butter in Los Angeles on Nov. 7, Garner wore a loose, asymmetrical Lanvin mini-dress, paired with thick black heels and a whole lotta leg. The previous Saturday, she wore a tightly-fitted black lace dress with towering bronze heels and a black tuxedo jacket at The Hollywood Reporter's Annual Next Generation Reception.

Of course, while Zoe may dictate Garner’s red carpet look, daytime is a different story. In the past few weeks, Garner has been repeatedly photographed out and about in Los Angeles, wearing comfortable clothing that much more closely resembles the wardrobe of an expectant mom: loose fitting jeans, leggings, flats, and maternity tops.

And as for red carpet looks for the duration of her pregnancy, Garner hasn’t given up hope of maternity-wear.

“I have four months to go," Garner said. "Sooner or later, [Zoe] is going to have to put me in a maternity dress. Eventually that is going to happen, but so far she has gotten her way.”

How can one attempt Garner's chic wardrobe on a budget? Rosie Pope, maternity fashion designer and star of Bravo's "Pregnant In Heels," uses TODAY.com's Katie Quinn to showcase the best fall and winter trends for new moms and moms-to-be.

Rocawear pulls controversial Jay-Z 'Occupy' T-shirt offline

    GlobalGrind.com

Jay-Z, shown here with Russell Simmons, has been criticized for his recent $22 "Occupy All Streets" T-shirt.

    by Justin Fenner, Styleite

Saturday morning, it seems Jay-Z took his much-maligned “Occupy All Streets” T-shirts off the sales rack.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Rocawear, the Jay-Z-owned clothing label that started selling the shirts Friday, stopped selling them because of the negative response they got in the press. Before pulling the shirts, the company released a statement confirming that they had been created to support the Occupy Wall Street movement, but Rocawear had no official plans to donate proceeds from the sale of the shirt to the cause.

The ‘Occupy All Streets’ T shirt was created in support of the ‘Occupy Wall Street’ movement. Rocawear strongly encourages all forms of constructive expression, whether it be artistic, political or social. ‘Occupy All Streets’ is our way of reminding people that there is change to be made everywhere, not just on Wall Street. At this time we have not made an official commitment to monetarily support the movement.

And that, understandably, is what made a lot of people angry.

We’re sure Jay-Z had the best of intentions, but what people saw was of a member of the wealthiest 1 percent making money by cosigning the sentiments of a movement run by the 99 percent, and not kicking any of it back to them. This shirt, they believed, was another example of the rich getting richer, making the shirt itself seem a little hollow.

So where are the $22 garments now? They’ve disappeared from the Rocawear website, but we have no doubt that there are countless thousands of them in distribution centers everywhere. Maybe, if the company donated those shirts to the protesters, it could save itself from a little of the embarrassment it’s suffered over the past few days.

Madonna to launch clothing line, fragrance for 'older' women

    By Justin Fenner, Styleite

Do you look longingly at the Material Girl section of your local Macy's juniors department every time you walk past it, wishing that Madonna would make a clothing line grown women could wear without feeling bad about it? Your wish is about to come true.

Women's Wear Daily reports that Madonna will soon launch Truth or Dare by Madonna, a lifestyle brand aimed at an "older customer." Representatives of MG Icon, the company that manages Material Girl, say Truth or Dare will start with a fragrance, then expand to clothing, handbags and accessories in the years to come.

Dress like Madge? Madonna attends the premiere for 'W.E' on October 23 in London.

"Over the past several years, I have been approached countless times to create my own brand," Madonna said. "The timing is right and I have found great partners in Iconix, who can help translate my vision to reality."

To say that they're prepared to make Madonna's brand a very lucrative one would be an understatement.

There's no official word on when the line or the fragrance will be available for purchase — which means we have no idea what it's going to cost yet. But you can probably expect that like Material Girl, Truth or Dare by Madonna will be sold at Macy's before it lands in any other store.

Beyonce reveals plans for sexy maternity line

    Getty Images file

A pregnant Beyonce, clad in sequins, attends the Beyonce Pulse fragrance launch at Penthouse on September 21, 2011 in New York City.

    By Rina Raphael

Beyonce's pregnancy is only getting bigger.

After announcing she's expecting with husband Jay-Z at the August 28 VMAs, the star's baby campaign is in full force. Beyonce has now announced plans for a maternity line under her House of Deréon fashion label.

"All I see now are clothes that are flattering on a pregnant woman," Beyonce, 30, told Harper's Bazaar. "It's been so exciting for me! I love figuring out designs that still make me feel edgy and sexy while pregnant. Flowery fabrics are always flattering — but I still rock my stilettos."

Beyonce has been photographed in recent weeks showing off her glamorous pregnancy wardrobe, including a sequin blazer on top of a sequin mini-dress.

So it's no surprise she's going into the baby-bump business, as everything the celebrity does has her "empire" in mind. Beyonce recently said her wait to have children had much to do with her career ambition. "It was important to me that I give myself time to focus on becoming the woman I want to be, building my empire, my self-worth, before I became a mother," she told Harper's Bazaar. "Now God has blessed us with the ultimate."

The star is due in February 2012. We can't wait for the next step: Beyonce's baby clothing collection.

    Rihanna ruffles animal activists' feathers

    Getty images

Rihanna launched her new scent, Reb'l Fleur, on August 19 in London. PETA takes issue with her shaggy outfit.

    By Rina Raphael

Rihanna’s certainly a fashion risk-taker, but did her recent shaggy ensemble cross the line? PETA certainly thinks so.

The animal rights organization is known for its constant fashion protests, but this one is unique in that it’s over feathers. At the August 19 launch of her Reb'l Fleur perfume, the singer donned a bright teal Antonio Berardi top, decorated with lush ostrich feathers, which has since been heavily criticized: PETA claims Rihanna “exploited” the birds for her “dubious looks,” since feathers are often "ripped off" live birds, resulting in "gaping" wounds."

The kicker comes when the controversial group questions how a famous victim of domestic violence could support live plucking.

“We keep hoping that Rihanna, a victim of violence herself, will learn to open her heart and start empathizing with the suffering of others. That includes the animals who are beaten, gassed, electrocuted and poisoned to be turned into fashion accessories."

In 2010, Rihanna promised to go fur-free after PETA named her one of the most egregious fur wearers. In response, PETA said they would be “keeping an eagle eye on what she wears.”

(Looks like someone’s keeping their promise.)

What do you think? Should Rihanna refrain from wearing feathers? Is it equivalent to wearing fur?

Does this controversial fashion spread glamorize domestic abuse?

    TylerShields.com

    By Rina Raphael

Is domestic abuse now... in style? A recent photo spread by celebrity photographer Tyler Shields featured “Glee” star Heather Morris  posing with a black eye, a bizarre styling Shields described as a roughed up doll; “Even Barbie gets bruises!” was the photo caption. (If Barbie accidentally walked into Ken’s fist?) Another image shows Morris’ wrists tied up as she tugs on an iron with her exposed teeth.

    TylerShields.com

As expected, the Internet exploded with severe criticism, with many believing the photographer was glamorizing victims of abuse. “I don't know if Tyler [Shields] is aware but I'm quite sure there are plenty of women who have been abused by these kinds of household appliances and children as well being hit with electrical cords," Rita Smith, executive director for the Denver-based National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, told E! News.

    Fluid Salon

Shields, however, told TMZ his portraits were in no way meant to represent domestic violence and that’s he’s “sorry it came off that way." So sorry, in fact, that he’s pledged to auction off one of the photos – including a starting bid of $100,000 – with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting a domestic violence charity.  The fact that the photograph is likely to end up framed on someone’s wall doesn’t speak volumes toward Shields’ regret. Moreover, the photographs are still viewable online.

While Shields says he’s making amends, his actions are unfortunately nothing new. Just last week, Fluid Salon in Edmonton, Canada, was also criticized for a disturbing ad featuring a model also styled with a bad black eye. The caption read: “Look Good in All you Do." This one, however, was intentional. The salon owners said they meant the ad to ignite a discussion on domestic violence. As of this morning, the owners have reportedly been the target the death threats and their premises vandalized with “This is art that is wrongly named violence.”

What do you think? Should domestic abuse play no role in fashion? Are folks correct to criticize these ads – or are they overreacting?
