NYU prof claims he was fired for giving James Franco a bad grade

    By Courtney Hazlett

James Franco might have moved on from his endeavors at NYU, but the actor is still a publicity machine for the university, but maybe not in the way NYU would have hoped for this time around. One of Franco's former professors, José Angel Santana, claims that he was fired for giving Franco a "D" in his class, "Directing the Actor II," and he's suing the school.

    Jack Plunkett / AP file

Actor James Franco was shooting the film "127 Hours" while also taking classes at NYU.

According to the New York Post, Santana's decision to give the poor grade stemmed from Franco's attendance in the class, or lack thereof. Franco allegedly missed 12 of the 14 classes, and since handing out the D, "Santana has suffered all kinds of drama -- first from Franco, who publicly ridiculed him, then from his department, which axed him over the 'D,'" according to the Post.

“In my opinion, they’ve turned the NYU graduate film degree into swag for James Franco’s purposes, a possession, something you can buy,” Santana told the paper.

Franco seemed incredulous over the grade when Showbiz411 spoke to him. “I did the work, I did well in everything else," Franco said at the time.

As for NYU, the University has yet to actually see what's been filed, but based on the following statement, their stance is clear. "We have not seen the lawsuit yet, but the claims we are seeing in the media are ridiculous. Beyond that, it is regrettable and disappointing to see a faculty member -- former or otherwise -- discuss any student's grade for the purpose of personal publicity."

Scooplets: Gwyneth's suggests $18,000 wardrobe, James Franco in porn film, more

    Mike Segar / Reuters

    Gwyneth Paltrow

    • To be fair, Gwyneth Paltrow never said everything on her website Goop would be attainable for the common man or woman. However, her suggestions for adding some "spring basics" to your wardrobe -- which includes a $2,145 Stella McCartney blazer, and other items that add up to a cool $18,000 -- makes one wonder just who she's writing this stuff for.

    • In Rashida Jones' next film, "My Idiot Brother," she makes out with Zooey Deschanel. About that: "I feel like I've come a long way from my first job, when I had to get mouth-to-mouth resuscitation from Rip Torn," she tells GQ.

    Chris Pizzello / AP file

    Victoria Beckham

    • Looks like Victoria Beckham has chosen a day to give birth to her daughter. She's reportedly booked for a C-section on July 4. The date is significant because "Victoria and David love America," and it's the couple's 12th wedding anniversary.

    • The next stop on the James Franco tour of various and sundry performance projects, the porn drama, "Cherry," Indiewire reports. Heather Graham, Dev Patel and Lili Taylor are also in the film.

Scooplets: James Franco's 'Brad' tattoo, Lady Gaga's 'Hair'

    Michael Yada / EPA

    • Here's a stirring sentence to start the morning: James Franco carved "Brad Renfro" into his arm. Franco's gesture is meant to pay tribute to Renfro, his co-star from 2002 movie "Deuces Wild." According to the L.A. Times, Franco performed the act with a switchblade, and he documented the process in photography and film.

    • Another Lady Gaga track has made its way to the internet. "Hair" is a song about her own hair, and being just as free as it is. "I've had enough / this is my prayer / that I'll die living just as free as my hair."

    • Newly pregnant starlet January Jones insists she does not diet. In fact, she stops at McDonalds from time to time. "I’ll stop at McDonald’s and get a strawberry shake and fries and not feel guilty at all, because I deserve it," she tells Allure in the issue on stands Tuesday.

Miley Cyrus pulls the 'I was misquoted' card

    Kevork Djansezian / Getty Images

Say what? Miley Cyrus onstage during Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Miley Cyrus is the latest celebrity to join the "I was misquoted" parade, saying that she really does like Internet sensation Rebecca Black. Cyrus last week told an Australian radio show that when it comes to the likes of Black, "It should be harder to be an artist. You shouldn't just be able to put a song on YouTube and go out on tour." Now, Cyrus is telling E!,"I am a fan of Rebecca Black. I love Rebecca Black. I just got misquoted. I think she's great."

Oh, Miley, you have to be smarter than that -- you said something you wish you hadn't, just admit that instead of pulling the misquoted card. But to be fair, the Disney-manufactured star has had celebrities with far more experience say honest things then blame the journalist or media for misquoting them about it.

Example A: Kate Walsh, who told More magazine that she feels like a "loser" for not having kids. Walsh then tweeted that the media was "making up news" and took the quotes out of context, and later tweeted that "feelings aren't facts, yo." So which is it?

And then there's the Bruce Vilanch/James Franco tiff that played out after New York magazine's Vulture blog quoted Vilanch as saying that Franco "didn't get there" as a host, which was only part of a series of quotes that seemed, more than anything, to defend what little performing Franco did on Oscar night. Franco later got back at Vilanch by later tweeting and quickly deleting this post, which was the catalyst for Vilanch's apology to Franco, that claimed the Vulture journalist took his remarks out of context.

All of this is my way of saying to celebrities, at this stage of the game with social media, we can sniff out an out-of-context remark. We like it when you are actually honest. Please just own the words that come out of your mouths.

Oscar writer says James Franco 'didn't get there'

Oscar joke writer Bruce Vilanch is opening up about how he thought James Franco's critically (and, basically, universally) panned Oscar hosting stint went, and Vilanch has a different, insider take on why the performance fell so flat.

"He has so many balls in the air, he didn't get to town till Thursday before the show on Sunday. And so we e-mailed a lot," Vilanch told Vulture. But we had a lot of meetings. He had a bunch of people who were writing for him, and if it had been him alone, it would have been different. But it was him and Anne Hathaway, and they both had to be serviced. So there was a lot of communication beforehand. But he didn't get there."

He also said that Franco was not high, as many have speculated. "No, he wasn't high," Vilanch said. "I was with him, and he wasn't high. And I asked him, 'Are you high, and can I have some?' And he said no to both."

Academy president says 'chemistry seemed off' for Franco, Hathaway

    Michael Yada / EPA

Making a conclusion the rest of the Oscar-watching audience made on Sunday, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Tom Sherak told The Hollywood Reporter that "the chemistry seemed to be off" between hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway.

Sherak, however, did not go on to blame Franco and Hathaway for anything that seemed wrong about the Oscar broadcast. He said that they did exactly what the producers and the Academy asked of them, but, "the problem is, in the past when you have a comic, that comic can play off what happens on the show," Sherak said of the hosts. "I think that was missing. I think they were doing their job. Franco is a very charming guy, but sometimes you need a comic to make fun of things."

If there is any blame to be placed on the broadcast, which saw viewership fall and the average age of the viewer rise to 50.6 years, it's the crop of movies that came out in 2010.

"What happens is very much impacted by the movies in any given year," he told THR. "We didn't have an 'Avatar' or a 'Titanic' this year. We had some really good movies that did a lot of business, but it is what it is. Next year, if there is a huge movie, you'll see more people."

James Franco bails on his own Oscar party

    Michael Yada / EPA

One of the more hyped Oscar parties of the week was to be James Franco's after-after party at Supper Club.

"People are going to be bailing on Madonna's party for James'," one of the people connected with the party told me early in the week. "We're already arranging blockades across the street, because we're expecting so many celebrities, that even at 4 a.m. we're expecting a crowd of people lined up to watch people arrive."

    Or not.

For starters, it appears that Franco himself didn't even make it to the party. A source at the party referred queries to Franco's Twitter, which showed a photo of a plane, with "time to get back to class" scrawled across it.

"He isn't much of a partier, he doesn't drink," said one source. "It was more about launching his bar, The Writer's Room, which is part of Supper Club."

Even so, the bash wasn't the star-studded occasion people hoped. Kevin Spacey and Seth Rogan were there -- not exactly star wattage to warrant those barriers the event planners ordered up.

Franco to host most exclusive party of Oscar night

James Franco isn't just hosting the Oscars, he's hosting what is becoming the most exclusive party of the week.

After the show Sunday, and after the Governor's Ball and the Vanity Fair party, a select few will be invited to Supper Club Los Angeles. Guests aren't expected to begin arriving until about 4 a.m., according to one person involved with the top-secret plans. "Expect military-grade security," said the planner. The source also said that the cuisine will be geared toward breakfast -- fitting, as guests are expected to be there still when the sun comes up.

The rival party at that hour: Madonna and Demi Moore's annual Oscar party at the home of music mogul Guy Oseary.

Spoiler alert! Oscar show rundown leaked

    Bob D'Amico / ABC

James Franco, left, and Anne Hathaway will serve as co-hosts of the 83rd Academy Awards on Sunday.

If you really can't wait until Sunday to know what's in store for the Oscar broadcast, then keep reading. Deadline Hollywood has obtained a rundown of the show, and if it's accurate (and you are fine with spoilers, this is your last chance to bail!) then there aren't going to be many risky surprises come Sunday.

What you can expect? Hilary Swank and Kathryn Bigelow will hand out best director awards ... James Franco and Anne Hathaway "pop up almost every minute," the show will open with Hathaway and Franco doing a Billy Crystal-esque taped spot where they appear in scenes from all 10 films that are nominate. There are things you won't see, too, like Franco and Hathaway doing any live musical numbers. Which might be a good thing, based on this.

You can read the complete details of the rundown here. Come back though and leave a note in the comments about how you think the show is shaping up.

Anne Hathaway's Oscar promo. Does it make you want to watch?

Let's be clear: every industry type I've spoken with has nothing but confidence in Anne Hathaway's ability to pull off hosting duties on Oscar night. It seems that it's really the general public who might have their doubts. Unfortunately, her latest promo doesn't doesn't exactly put those doubts to rest. But that's just my opinion. What do you think? Is she showing range here, or trying a little too hard? Are you excited to see her and Franco on Oscar night, or is it really the awards that matter? Leave a note in the comments.

James Franco reveals banned Oscars tune

Remember when Bruce Vilanch revealed that James Franco won't be dressing up like Cher for the Oscars? Well, seems there's even more to the story -- Franco also won't be singing like Cher, or at least trying to.

"They pulled this from the Oscar show," Franco tweeted, with a link to an audio clip of him (attempting) to sing "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me," from "Burlesque." Take a listen -- if Franco is serious here, the show producers made the right call.

Oscar nominees dish at annual luncheon

Did your invitation to the Oscar Nominees Luncheon today in Beverly Hills get lost in the mail? Not to worry, we’ve got some of the highlights for you below.

You’ll find Nicole Kidman talking about how well represented Australia is among the nominees, and how her daughter Sunday Rose might want her to dress Oscar night (hint: it could involve a tutu).

Also, young “True Grit” actress Hailee Steinfeld remains every bit as pure and sweet as you hoped she might.

Natalie Portman seems a little irritated with the fashion questions at this point in awards season.

And James Franco drops some more hints about what you might expect when he co-hosts the big show with Anne Hathaway. Take a look. And share your predictions/hopes for Oscar night in the comments.

I hate Nicole Kidman's fake top lip.  It's so distracting and makes it hard for me to watch her movies.  Get rid of it!!!!
