Who's the dope in Miley Cyrus pot controversy?

    By Courtney Hazlett

Just days before Thanksgiving, Miley Cyrus celebrated her 19th birthday with friends at Beacher's Madhouse inside L.A.'s Roosevelt Hotel. At the blessed event, Cyrus was presented a cake in the likeness of Bob Marley, and in a video obtained by The Daily, the former Disney star responded to the gesture, saying, ""You know you're a stoner when your friends make you a Bob Marley cake. You know you smoke way too much f---ing weed!"

Dominique Faget / AFP - Getty Images file

What to do with this piece of information ... chastise Cyrus for no longer being the embodiment of the good-girl, Disney image? Fear that she's going down the path paved by Lindsay Lohan? Ignore the story all together? Readers offered varied opinions in a discussion over here on Facebook on Sunday.

If you're Kelly Osbourne, who is featured prominently in the video, you stand by your friend. On Twitter, Osbourne wrote, "u guys if @MileyCyrus is not recording/filming/touring she is works everyday how could she possible do all that if she was a stoner! #think." Grammatically correct, no, but the point is there. At least in Osbourne's opinion, Cyrus couldn't be a productive person if she was "a stoner."

Cyrus' rep didn't leave her client twisting in the breeze: she came out with the tried-and-true (and tired) "it was taken out of context" defense. "It's all been taken out of context. The cake was a joke and Miley's response was intended to be sarcastic."

Handling controversy is exactly what publicists are paid to do, but if this was going to be the response, the best response would have been to just pretend it didn't happen. Cyrus might only be 19, but she used up her sympathy cards long ago. When you grow up in the business, then you know how the business works, period. You know that there are times to be sarcastic, and times when your sarcasm (if that's what it really is) will be taken out of context. If you want the freedom to make any comment you want, then know enough to have your birthday party with people you really trust, and not at a place that seems to invite bad press, like the Roosevelt Hotel.

Cyrus is entitled to grow out of her "Hannah Montana" image, and truthfully, I've got better things to concern myself with than the question of her does-she-or-doesn't-she pot use, or whether she's a Lohan in training. What's irritating about this story is the complete lack of common sense at play. Miley, you should just know better.

Red-carpet review: Beyonce bumps aside competition at VMAs

    Getty Images

    By Kurt Schlosser

No one would ever turn to the annual MTV Video Music Awards in search of the most glamorous red-carpet fashions. Certainly there are star-studded events which lend themselves to a classier brand of celeb couture. But MTV's VMAs are always worth watching to see who turns up wearing what.

We skipped Lady Gaga's Jo Calderone drag act here, and Nicki Minaj in dayglo somesuch is nothing new, is it? Admittedly, the foursome we assembled here isn't pushing the envelope very far. But take a look at, from left, Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Beyonce and Miley Cyrus -- we've got a little leg, a little pink hair, a couple long gowns. But the accessory everyone was talking about Sunday night wasn't Perry's umbrella. It was that bump under Beyonce's orange dress. Tough to beat that no matter what you dress it up with.

Was there anyone you saw at the VMAs that you loved or loathed? Talk about the event and the fashions here and on Facebook.

    • In good casting news: Jeremy Renner has been offered the lead in "The Bourne Legacy." The Oscar-nominee will not be taking over the role originated by Matt Damon; Renner will play a new character. "An agent in a different covert government program than the on that ensnared and pursued Matt Damon's Jason Bourne," according  to Entertainment Weekly.

    • Miley Cyrus has royal wedding fever! Specifically, she'd like to be one of Kate Middleton's flower girls. Because she knows their dresses "will be amazing," the AP reports.

Miley Cyrus pulls the 'I was misquoted' card

    Kevork Djansezian / Getty Images

Say what? Miley Cyrus onstage during Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Miley Cyrus is the latest celebrity to join the "I was misquoted" parade, saying that she really does like Internet sensation Rebecca Black. Cyrus last week told an Australian radio show that when it comes to the likes of Black, "It should be harder to be an artist. You shouldn't just be able to put a song on YouTube and go out on tour." Now, Cyrus is telling E!,"I am a fan of Rebecca Black. I love Rebecca Black. I just got misquoted. I think she's great."

Oh, Miley, you have to be smarter than that -- you said something you wish you hadn't, just admit that instead of pulling the misquoted card. But to be fair, the Disney-manufactured star has had celebrities with far more experience say honest things then blame the journalist or media for misquoting them about it.

Example A: Kate Walsh, who told More magazine that she feels like a "loser" for not having kids. Walsh then tweeted that the media was "making up news" and took the quotes out of context, and later tweeted that "feelings aren't facts, yo." So which is it?

And then there's the Bruce Vilanch/James Franco tiff that played out after New York magazine's Vulture blog quoted Vilanch as saying that Franco "didn't get there" as a host, which was only part of a series of quotes that seemed, more than anything, to defend what little performing Franco did on Oscar night. Franco later got back at Vilanch by later tweeting and quickly deleting this post, which was the catalyst for Vilanch's apology to Franco, that claimed the Vulture journalist took his remarks out of context.

All of this is my way of saying to celebrities, at this stage of the game with social media, we can sniff out an out-of-context remark. We like it when you are actually honest. Please just own the words that come out of your mouths.

Miley's mom says family 'weathered a huge storm'

    Getty Images file

Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus have been married 17 years.

In recent weeks, Miley Cyrus has stayed out of trouble and Billy Ray has pulled the plug on his divorce from Tish. So it comes as little surprise that Miley's mom is announcing that the Cyrus family is in a good place.

"Big thanks to all of our family, friends, and fans who have kept us in their thoughts and prayers," Tish wrote on her Facebook page. "I feel so blessed to have so much support from all of you.

"Our family weathered a huge storm and I feel we are stronger than we have ever been! Much love to all of you guys! Your (sic) the BEST."

Billy Ray shared a similar sentiment on "The View" last week, when he said, "Things are the best they've ever been. I want to put my family back together."

Billy Ray and Tish have been married 17 years, and have four children.

Billy Ray Cyrus works on 'mending family'

    Reuters file

After Billy Ray Cyrus' frank comments to Rolling Stone -- in which he said he was "afraid" for his daughter Miley and that her hit show "Hannah Montana" "ruined" his family" -- the country singer is telling People magazine that he's trying to put the pieces back together.

"It is very important to me to work on mending my family right now," Cyrus told People.

Calling his recent comments "explosive, and unintentionally so," Cyrus said to People, "My family is the most important thing I have, and we are working together to make sure our future is stronger and healthier."

As such, Cyrus has left the Tennessee home where he was staying when the Rolling Stone interview took place and he is spending time in Los Angeles with his wife Trish and youngest daughter Noah.

"It is all a learning process, and we thank everyone for their support and respect of our privacy as we sort through very important family issues," he told the magazine.

Billy Ray Cyrus: 'Hannah Montana' destroyed my family

The father of teen sensation Miley Cyrus speaks openly about his concern for his daughter and criticizes her handlers for some of the bumps in her career. TODAY's Natalie Morales reports.

Billy Ray Cyrus gave one of his most candid interviews in the new issue of GQ, telling the magazine that he wishes that the Disney show he and daughter Miley Cyrus starred in, "Hannah Montana," never happened. It "destroyed my family ... I'd take it back in a second. For my family to be here and just be OK, safe and sound and happy and normal, would have been fantastic," he said in the interview.

Cyrus also took the time to set the record straight and distance himself from many other parents of child stars and revealed that he's never profited from Miley's success. "For the record, to set it straight, I want to tell you: I've never made a dime off of Miley. You got a lot of people (who) have made percentages off of her. I'm proud to say to this day I've never made one commissioned dollar, or dime, off of my daughter."

    Reuters file

Cyrus is not oblivious to his daughter's press disasters: the Vanity Fair photo shoot, the pole dancing incident, to name a couple. Those scandals are what led him to decide to not attend Miley's 18th birthday party, where Miley ultimately was photographed mid-makeout.

"You know why I didn't go? Because they were having it in a bar. It was wrong. It was for 21 years old and up. Once again all them people, they all wanted me to fly out so that then when all the bad press came they could say, 'Daddy endorsed this stuff. ...' I started realizing I'm being used. If I would have went out there I would have been right in the middle of all this stuff that's going on right now with the bong. They'd be hanging it on my ass. I had the common sense ... I said, 'This whole thing's falling apart up there and they just want to blame all of this stuff on you again.' I'm staying out of it."

Miley Cyrus gets tattoo No. 5 ... and it's a big one

    Mike Nelson / EPA file

At this rate, there won't be a lot of ink-free skin left on Miley Cyrus, shown here last November.

Miley Cyrus is drawing attention again, this time for the enormous tattoo she just got.

Spanning the better part of the side of her torso, Cyrus has inked a dream catcher onto her body. A close friend told People (which shows the tattoo here), "It's a picture of the dream catcher that hangs over her bed with four feathers to represent her four brothers and sisters. The dream catcher is to protect them."

That brings the tattoo tally up to five. The 18-year-old singer also has a heart and small cross on her fingers, "love" on her ear and "just breath" on her rib cage.

Sources say Miley Cyrus thinks bong video is no big deal

    AP file

Although scores of fans and parents were outraged by the recent video of Miley Cyrus hitting a bong allegedly packed with the psychoactive drug Salvia, Cyrus herself "doesn't view it as a big deal," according to sources connected with the singer/actress.

In fact, Cyrus is just acting like a typical teenager who doesn't listen to her parents, says a source close to the pop star who spoke to Us Weekly. However, Cyrus' case is inherently different: "Miley is a rich teenager. She does what she wants."

Doing what she wants during her own time is one thing, but doing what she wants on the set of her films is another. Us reports that while on the set of "LOL," which co-stars Demi Moore, Cyrus was difficult to control. One example: a stylist would adjust Cyrus' shirt properly, but once the director yelled "action," Cyrus would "pop open two buttons and pull her top off her shoulder," according to a set source who spoke to the magazine. "Every single take. Tish (Cyrus' mom) asked the producers to talk to her because Miley wouldn't listen to her."

Cyrus is currently filming another movie, "So Undercover," alongside Kelly Osbourne in and around New Orleans. On Dec. 12, Cyrus was spotted at a local club (where she drank Red Bull) and danced until the wee hours of the morning.

Video shows Miley Cyrus taking bong hit at party

    TMZ

Ramping up the perceived effort to put more distance between her adult self and her "Hannah Montana" past, Miley Cyrus is featured in a new video smoking from a bong during a party at her home on Nov. 28.

In the video obtained by TMZ -- and shot five days after her 18th birthday -- the singer says, "OK, I'm about to lose it now," after taking her first hit. "I'm having a little bit of a bad trip."

The person behind the camera says, "I'm just gonna document the s--- out of this right now," as the Bush song "Come Down" plays in the background.

According to TMZ sources, the smoke inside the bong is a natural herb called salvia, which has psychedelic qualities. Possession of salvia is legal in California. (Read more about the "magic mint" here.)

Cyrus goes on to mistake a party guest for then-boyfriend Liam Hemsworth.

"Is that my boyfriend?! Oh my God! He looks so much like him! He looks so much like Liam," Cyrus says. She then asks another partygoer, "Is that me tripping? He doesn't look like Liam at all?"

Another person in the background eats from a box of Frosted Flakes cereal as Cyrus continues to laugh uncontrollably.

TMZ says the video was likely copied or stolen from the person who shot it.

Breathe easy: Miley Cyrus shows off chest tattoo

    Dominique Faget/AFP - Getty Images

If Miley Cyrus' controversial Vanity Fair shoot and "Can't Be Tamed" video weren't enough to convince you that our little girl is all grown up now, please reference exhibit C: the pop star's chest tattoo.

The ink reads "just breathe" and was first spotted when Cyrus was vacationing in Miami last year. It is reportedly a tribute to a friend who died of cystic fibrosis.

This photo was taken at the MTV Europe Music Awards Sunday night in Madrid, Spain.
