    Rihanna ruffles animal activists' feathers

    Getty images

Rihanna launched her new scent, Reb'l Fleur, on August 19 in London. PETA takes issue with her shaggy outfit.

    By Rina Raphael

Rihanna’s certainly a fashion risk-taker, but did her recent shaggy ensemble cross the line? PETA certainly thinks so.

The animal rights organization is known for its constant fashion protests, but this one is unique in that it’s over feathers. At the August 19 launch of her Reb'l Fleur perfume, the singer donned a bright teal Antonio Berardi top, decorated with lush ostrich feathers, which has since been heavily criticized: PETA claims Rihanna “exploited” the birds for her “dubious looks,” since feathers are often "ripped off" live birds, resulting in "gaping" wounds."

The kicker comes when the controversial group questions how a famous victim of domestic violence could support live plucking.

“We keep hoping that Rihanna, a victim of violence herself, will learn to open her heart and start empathizing with the suffering of others. That includes the animals who are beaten, gassed, electrocuted and poisoned to be turned into fashion accessories."

In 2010, Rihanna promised to go fur-free after PETA named her one of the most egregious fur wearers. In response, PETA said they would be “keeping an eagle eye on what she wears.”

(Looks like someone’s keeping their promise.)

What do you think? Should Rihanna refrain from wearing feathers? Is it equivalent to wearing fur?

Rihanna defends the art of sexting

    Mark Seliger for Rolling Stone

Rihanna is red hot right now, and on the cover of Rolling Stone. In the accompanying interview, Rihanna opens up about Chris Brown ("we don't have to talk ever again in my life"), putting up her guard after Brown assaulted her, and now, her stance on sexting.

"When you're not with the person you want to be intimate with, a picture is the next best thing," she told Rolling Stone. "Well, Skype is safer. But a picture lasts a long time. When you're alone ... pictures can be very handy."

Report: Chris Brown leaves show in a rage over Rihanna questions

    Doug Meszler / Splash News

Chris Brown is seen shirtless in Times Square after his "Good Morning America" appearance on Tuesday.

Chris Brown appeared on "Good Morning America" Tuesday morning, and according to a report on TMZ, the singer had a pretty major meltdown after becoming angry about questions regarding his ex, Rihanna.

According to TMZ, Robin Roberts asked Brown about legal issues stemming from the assault on Rihanna, and after unsuccessfully redirecting the subject back to his new album, Brown "freaked out" after the interview, "storming into his dressing room and screaming so loud, the people in hair and makeup became alarmed and called security."

TMZ says that "one source present tells us he smashed a window in his dressing room, and the glass shattered and some shards fell onto 43rd and Broadway," and by the time security arrived, "Brown had ripped off his shirt and left the building, blowing off another performance ... for the ABC website."

Of course, Brown took to Twitter later Tuesday morning to offer some insight. "Thank you to everyone who supports my music!!! Key Word ( music) !!! Love y'all."

Brown's publicist has not yet returned TODAY.com's call for comment on the incident.

Update: TMZ is now reporting that Roberts asked Brown if she could question him about the Rihanna incident, and Brown consented. Read more about it here.

Chris Brown asks judge to remove restraining order

    David McNew / Getty Images

R&B singer Chris Brown, right, appears in court with his attorney Mark Geragos for a probation progress report hearing in Los Angeles on Jan. 28.

Chris Brown has completed the 52-week, court-mandated domestic violence counseling in connection with the 2009 assault against Rihanna, and on Friday, he asked a judge to lift the restraining order that still remains in place.

Brown's attorney Mark Geragos told judge Patirica Schnegg that the order, which stipulates that Brown not have any contact with Rihanna for five years, "makes it difficult at award shows and such," Radar reported.

The judge did not grant the request, but told Geragos he could modify the order with the cooperation of Rihanna's attorney, David Etra. Etra said he'd have to speak with Rihanna before making any modifications.

    Rihanna getting Playboy offers

If Rihanna is going to pose naked, she's not going to do it for the money, and it won't be for Playboy ... at least anytime soon.

While on Hot 97's "The Angie Martinez Show" Wednesday, the singer admitted to receiving offers to pose for Playboy, but she's turned them all down. "I got a few offers to do Playboy actually. The want to pay (me) to be naked on the cover," she said. "If I'm gonna to take my clothes off, it has to be in a classy way and (because of) my will, not a check. I wouldn't take any money to do that."

Rihanna just released her fifth album, "Loud."

Did fight with boyfriend keep Rihanna from Katy Perry's wedding?

The official reason that Rihanna missed close friend Katy Perry's Oct. 23 wedding in India is that she was in the studio putting final touches on her new album (out Nov. 16) and, as she told Life & Style, was afraid she "couldn't get any phone or Internet service over there."

The magazine is now reporting in its new issue that an argument with boyfriend Matt Kemp kept Rihanna from attending. "Matt heard rumors that Rihanna and Drake recently got cozy at a New York club," according to a source who spoke to the magazine. "They had a big argument over it. Rihanna was very upset and couldn't face getting on a plane and going to India for a romantic wedding ceremony."

Rihanna and Matt Kemp, getting serious

    Getty Images file

Rihanna could be following in her friend Katy Perry's footsteps by taking a trip down the aisle herself. According to sources who spoke to Us Weekly, the singer and professional baseball player Matt Kemp, her beau of eight months, are getting quite serious.

“They are in love,” a source told the magazine. “Seeing them interact, it’s definitely possible he could propose — but it’d have to be a long engagement, because they’re both so focused on their careers.”

“He centers her, as he has a more normal life,” another Rihanna source told Us. “He allows her space, but they text and talk all the time. And they really have fun like kids when they’re together. They like to laugh and be silly.”
